Sandal Wood - Santalum Album Santalum album or Indian sandalwood is a small tropical tree, and is the most commonly known source of sandalwood. This species has historically been cultivated, processed and traded since ancient times. Certain cultures place great significance on its fragrant and medicinal qualities. The high value of the species has caused its past exploitation, to the point where the wild population is vulnerable to extinction. Indian sandalwood still commands high prices for its essential oil, but due to lack of sizable trees it is no longer used for fine woodworking as before. The plant is widely cultivated and long lived, although harvest is viable after 40 years. The sandalwood tree can grow in almost any part of India (which is why any Indian will recognize the fragrant wood, even though they might refer to sandalwood by one of its many aliases.) The sandalwood tree flourishes in regions where the climate is cool with moderate rainfall, plentiful sunshine and long periods of dry weather. Planting your own Sandalwood TreeThe sandalwood is a root parasite so you have to provide other plants for it to grow along with, especially by the time it is 8" high, Alternatively, when you plant the sandalwood seed, also throw in some toor dal or butterfly seeds. Plant the sandalwood seed ¾" to 1" below the soil and water it lightly everyday. If you don't have access to a strip of soil, you can plant the seed in a soil bed or a pot, or recycle a milk-bag by punching holes in it, adding soil and turning it into a tiny planter. You can move it to a larger bag or a larger pot as required, and gift the sapling to someone else if you run out of space. Mix red earth, farmyard manure (cattle manure) and sand in a ratio of 2:1:1 i.e 2 parts of red earth, 1 part of manure and 1 part of sand. Silt also provides very good nourishment to plants. The seeds will start sprouting only in 4 to 8 weeks so don't stop watering if you don't see results - and don't over water, because that certainly won't hasten the process! The soil should always be moist, never water logged, so after it has sprouted, water it only on alternate days. Eventually, if you have no place to transfer the plant to, you can keep the sandalwood tree in a large container (cement chilla /pot/etc) in your balcony or terrace, strip compound. When your saplings are about one month old, transplanting them to a larger area will give them a much higher chance to survive and thrive. Clear an area for planting and dig a pit about 30cm3 in size. Plant the sandalwood seedlings along with the host seedlings - keep a distance of 2.5 to 4m between two sandalwood plants. Usually, sandalwood is transplanted in the months between May and October. To prevent contamination of local varieties, plant these seeds only in urban areas, not in protected forest areas.

Christmas palm Veitchia merrillii is known by several common names like Christmas Palm, Manila Palm, Kerpis Palm, Adonidia, Dwarf Royal Palm, it is categorized under palm family, Arecaceae and native to Philippines and surrounding areas. Fruit a drupe 3.5 x 5.5 cm, longitudinally 5-winged, glabrous; wings equal, thin, pubescent, lines on the wings horizontal, apex round, coriaceous, reddish-brown; seed one. Growing season and Type: 1. Asan is a tree growing to 30 m tall, with a trunk diameter of 1 m. The fruit is ovoid, 3 cm long, with five wings not extending beyond the fruit apex. Sweet lemons are a medium to large varietal, averaging 6 to 7 centimeters in diameter, and have a round to oval shape with a slightly flattened base. The tropical jackfruit tree (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is a large evergreen tree that bears edible fruit. It has a relatively fast growth rate, and new trees can start producing fruit within a few years. It’s best planted in the spring. The tree trunk grows fairly straight and has reddish-brown bark. From it extend large branches with glossy green leaves that are around 8 inches long. The tree produces showy green flowers mostly in the fall, though it can bloom sporadically at other points in the year. Its yellow-green, kidney bean-shaped fruits are notoriously huge, maturing on the tree in the midsummer. They average between 10 and 40 pounds, though some fruits have been known to weigh 80 pounds or more. The inner yellow flesh is mildly sweet and has been compared to bananas and pineapples.

Amla (big size fruit) Indian Goosberry The tree is small to medium in size, reaching 8 to 18 m in height, with a crooked trunk and spreading branches. Ripening in autumn, the berries are harvested by hand after climbing to upper branches bearing the fruits. The taste of Indian gooseberry is sour, bitter and astringent, and it is quite fibrous. In India, it is common to eat gooseberries steeped in salt water and turmeric to make the sour fruits palatable. It is also used to straighten hair. Religious significance The tree is considered sacred by Hindus as the Vishnu is believed to dwell here. The tree is worshipped on Amalaka Ekadashi. In other Hindu myths, Aamla is said to be originated from the drops of Amrit which spilled on earth accidentally, due to the fight of Gods and Demons after ksheera sagar manthan. And hence also this religious belief makes claims that it almost cures every disease and is also good in extending the longevity of life. Soil and climate Light  as well as  medium heavy soils except  purely sandy soil is ideal for amla  cultivation. The tree is well adopted to dry regions and can also be grown in moderate alkaline soils. PropagationAmla  is generally propagated by shield budding. Budding is done on one year old seedlings with buds collected from superior varieties yielding big sized fruits. Older trees or poor yielders can be changed into superior types by top working. PlantingThe pits of 1 m3 are to be dug during May-June at a distance of 4.5 m x 4.5 m spacing and should be left for 15-20 days exposing to sunlight. Each pit should be filled with surface soil mixed with 15 kg farm yard manure and 0.5 kg of phosphorus before planting the budded seedling. IrrigationYoung  plants require watering during summer months at 15 days interval till they are  fully established. Watering of  bearing plants is advised during summer months at bi-weekly interval. HarvestingAmla tree starts bearing after about 4-5 years of planting. The fruits are harvested during February when they become dull greenish yellow from light green. The mature fruits are hard and they do not fall at gentle touch and therefore vigorous shaking is required. Fruits can also be harvested using long bamboo poles attached with hooks.
