Presto’s Cobb sizing tester is designed and manufactured for quickly determining the quantity of water absorbed by a paper or cardboard in a specific time period. The Cobb value of a substance means the quantity of water absorbed in a given time by a 1 square meter sample of cardboard, corrugated board, or a paper under different conditions. The testing instrument provides accurate and measurable results. The Cobb sizing test is done to determine an adequacy level of paperboard, in which a test sample is first weighed and then placed in a watertight rubber base cylindrical ring. Now, the cylindrical container is filled with sufficient quantity of water, exposing the upper side of the sample to the water. After a specific time period, the water is drained, and remaining water blotted off the surface of the paper, and the weight of the sample is measured again. The increased weight the sample has gained is its water absorbency. Presto's Cobb Test for Corrugated Board is used for quick assessment of the quantity of water absorbed by a corrugated board, paperboard or paper in a given period of time. The water absorptiveness or Cobb value of a substance is defined as the mass of water which is absorbed in a specified period of time by a paper sample, board sample of 1 square meter under the highly standardized conditions. Cobb tester means the amount of liquid penetration into a sheet of paper, corrugated board or paperboard. The instrument comprises of a cylindrical container which is clamped to a flat base with a flexible and removable base through which the sample is placed. The conditioned test specimen is weighed and then placed inside the cylindrical vessel on the dry surface. After that 100 cc of water is poured over the sample. After a given period of time water is poured off and the test piece is taken out from the cylindrical vessel and placed on the dry bottling paper with the wet side up. Another bottling paper is taken out to put it on the top of the wet sample, and excessive water is drained out by pressing it with the roller, two times in forward direction and 2 times in backward direction. Water Absorptiveness also known as the Cobb Value is the function or method to determine the characteristics of paper, paperboard & corrugated boards including the porosity, sizing, and fiber compositions. This process is performed on various sheets or non-bibulous i.e. highly absorbent paper or paperboards in order to determine the relative rate of penetration of aqueous solutions such as water or other solutions. It indicates the degree of the surface and internal sizing. This method is not designed for the water resistance test and neither to measure the resistance to minute quantities of a liquid, but it is introduced to test how much water a material can absorb in a given period of time so as to check the penetration strength of the material. If a specimen absorbs more water, then it will be considered as unappropriate materials to fulfill the purpose of packaging and if a specimen absorbs less water, then it will be considered as most appropriate materials to fulfill the purpose of packaging.

The Cobb Sizing tester is used to measure an optimum level of water which can be absorbed by a paperboard efficiently. To perform the test, the same is first weighed and then place in cylindrical ring which is full of 100 cc of liquid. After a period of time, the water is drained out, and the excessive amount of water left in the specimen is drained with the help of a roller. Now again take the weight of the specimen.
