The apparatus consists of a hemisphere surrounded by hot water. Hot water is obtained from a water-heating tank. When the blackened disc is inserted at the center of hemisphere, heat is transferred to the disc from hemisphere by radiation and its temperature begins to rise, and from temperature rise rate. Pin Fin Apparatus
The ‘Swarg Systems & Instruments’ apparatus consists of a pin type fin heated by a band heater at one end. A centrifugal blower draws air over the fin. Thermocouples are attached along the length of fin to note down the longitudinal temperature gradient. Heat input to the fin is measured from electrical input to the fin. Air flow is measured by an orifice and water manometer. Thus the students can conduct the experiments in natural and forced convection and at various airflow rates, various heat inputs and with fins of different materials.

The ‘Swarg Systems & Instruments’ heat pump is a compact, self contained unit. It uses R-12 refrigerant and a hermetically sealed compressor. (Refrigerant R-134A can also be supplied, instead of R-12) Both the condenser and evaporator are continuous water circulated. Flow of water in condenser and evaporator and of liquid refrigerant are measured by rotameters. Energy input to compressor is also measured and balance of heat added during the cycle and heat removed by the condenser can be checked. Also actual, theoretical and Carnot COPs of system can be determined and principle of energy conservation by heat pump can also be studied. Heat transfer coefficients on coils of condenser and evaporator can also be studied. The unit consists of a motor driven journal shaft mounted in bearings over which a bearing floats. Oil is supplied to bearing by gravity feed, from oil supply tank. The motor is provided with speed control. In order to avoid clumsiness & height limitation problems with ordinary oil tube manometers, a pressure gauge is provided, which is connected to a tapping over the bearing. The tapping can be rotated to required angular position around the journal axis, so that pressure distribution around the bearing can be noted. A torque arm and weights provided enable to measure the friction torque. Weight set is provided to load the bearing. Thus experiments can be conducted at various loads & speeds. Due to rotating pressure gauge, high pressures can be measured, avoiding overflow and air bubble problems of conventional oil manometer type units. Also, an accurate determination of graph of coefficient of friction Vs. Sommer Feld number is possible, which is useful to decide whether the bearing is operating in boundary lubrication or oil film lubrication. SPECIFICATIONS Journal dia- 49.8.mm, length 50mm. As conventional ice plants take 12-24 hours to complete the cycle, this ice plant is specially designed to demonstrate all the processes of ice formation like bubbles, flakes formation to be complete within one experimental period of 4 hours and hence it is most suitable for laboratory use. It also demonstrates the effect of size of ice can over the time for ice formation. Also, for long life, both the inner and outer tanks are made of stainless steel. SPECIFICATIONS1. The pipes are heated at one end and water tank is provided at the other end of the pipe to take out the heat. Thermocouples are provided along the length of pipes so that nearly isothermal operation of heat pipe as compared to other conductors can be demonstrated. Rapid rise of water temperature in the tank around heat pipe demonstrates super conductivity of heat pipe as compared to copper pipe as good conductor of heat and to stainless steel pipe as same material of construction.
