The use of Paper Mache started from China during the Han dynasty in 105 A.D. Paper Mache is a French word which means mashed paper. It was introduced in India in 15th century when King Zain-ul-Abidin invited the renowned artists from Central Asia. The art was known in Kashmir as Kar-i-qalamdan, it was used for decorating the pen stands and other small articles. Then its applications evolved and it was started being used at palanquins, windows, ceilings, doors. It is made from waste papers, rice straws, copper sulphate all mixed together to produce a pulp. When this pulp dries it is rubbed with and smoothed with the help of stonebrush on a mould.
