Seamless pipe as the name suggests is a pipe without a seam or a weld-joint in contrast to Seam or Welded pipe. In a Seam or Welded pipe, the seam or the weld-joint is the weaker part of the pipe limiting the strength of the pipe to the strength of the weld-joint. Galvanised Iron (GI) Pipes are manufactured using mild steel strips of Low Carbon Steel Coils. The strips are passed through a series of fin rolls to give them a circular shape. The slit ends of the strips are then welded together by continuously passing high frequency electric current across the edges. The welded steel pipes are then passed through sizing sections where any dimensional deviations are corrected. The pipes are then cut into desired lengths by automatic cutting machines. The tubes are then pressure tested for any leaks randomly. The galvanization and varnishing of pipes are done as per specific requirements.

ERW (Electrical Resistance Welding) pipes are manufactured by cold forming of steel coil into a round cylindrical shape. In the initial times it was done with the low frequency A.C. current to heat the edges. Now, since 1970 the low frequency process changed to high frequency A.C. current to produce a higher quality weld.

Cold Drawn Seamless (CDS) as implied is made by cold drawing a larger mother seamless pipe, which is generally manufactured through a HFS process. In the CDS process, the mother pipe is pulled through a die & plug in cold without any heating. Because of the tool on outside and inside the surface and tolerances are better in CDS. While this is an additional process over HFS, it is necessary to get smaller size pipes which otherwise cannot be manufactured in HFS. Some applications which require close tolerances and smooth surfaces also specify the requirements to be necessarily CDS. CDS pipes & tubes are extensively used in Heat-Exchanger, Bearing & Automotive sectors.
