The Cores Styles of MMA MMA is not a style; MMA is a sport in which different styles of martial arts are used. So a Good Mixed Martial Arts School will offer the styles that are most dominant in MMA competition and have experts in each style as instructors. Fighting is broken into two main categories : Fighting on the feet : striking and takedowns. Fightingon the ground : It is commonly accepted that the single most effective martial arts for each of these areas is Muay Thai (standing) and Jiu-jitsu (on the ground) - both have overlapping throwing/takedown techniques that make the two arts blend very well together. These two styles are both tried and true, battle tested and historically well developed over hundreds of years. Other "western" martial arts are often added such as Boxing and Wrestling for focus training in the specific areas of punching (boxing) and takedowns (wresting), but neither of these styles are complete; meaning, they do not offer a complete array of techniques for all situations (ex: boxing has no kicking techniques and wrestlers are not trained to deal with strikes or fight from their backs while on the ground. Jiu-jitsu (Brazilian jiu-jitsu in particular) is the only single Martial Arts style to address fighting in every conceivable position both standing and on the ground. Muay Thai is widely considered the most well rounded style of striking and well known for having the most powerful kicking techniques. In summary, the most complete striking art is Muay Thai and the most complete Ground Fighting Art is wrestling and Jiu-hiutsu. Training in these two proven styles will make you an effective, well rounded fighter without becoming a jack of all trades.
