Guggul” is the common name for the flowering mukul myrrh tree (Commiphora mukul). It is a small, thorny tree that is most commonly found in India, Guggul is a Sanskrit word which literally means “one that protects from the diseases”. It is in fact an oleoresin which is secreted from plant Comniphora mukul under the influence of the sunrays in summers and then solidifies in winters which is then harvested for various purposes. It itself exhibits anti- inflammatory , analgesic, anti- microbial, anti – dyslipedemic, anti- atherosclerotic, hematopoietic properties. When administered internally it is known to be exhibit carminative, appetizing, diaphoretic, aphrodisiac and emmenogogue properties. Being oleoresin it has property to bind a number of Ayurvedic herbs and Bhasmas together without altering their therapeutic efficacy and safety & that made it obvious choice of Ayuvedic physicians to use it as binding agent to make pills.
