Two-pass elements, as shown in the cutaway view, have a U-bent coil inside the sheath and two leads or terminals at one end. Welding or silver soldering seals the opposite end. These elements are available in straight lengths, either finned or unfinned. They can be permanently mounted with a variety of factory-furnished mounting methods. Ceramic band heaters are available with different terminal styles, are fully flexible, and can accommodate holes and cut-outs. Construction: Ceramic Band Heaters design consist of a helically wound resistance coil made from 80/20 Nichrome wire, evenly stretched and precisely strung through a specially designed Ceramic insulating bricks forming a flexible heating mat. The ceramic heating mat along with 1/4" thick ceramic fiber insulation is placed in a stainless steel housing made with serrated edges providing maximum flexibility for easy installation. This construction prevents heat loss and reduces electrical consumption by 15%. Because of low thermal conductivity of CFI the external surface temperature of the Ceramic Band is around 200ºC while running the inside surface temperature at 650ºC.Heat is transferred from a ceramic heater to the surface of an application through conduction and radiation. This is why a tight grip on the cylinder is not as critical as in other types of heaters. Moreover, over tightening should be avoided, since the pressure on the insulation mat reduces its insulating efficiency. The sheath material is Stainless Steel and heater diameter will vary depending on CAST-IN heater design. Aluminum is the predominant alloy used for CAST-IN heaters. Brass is used when the operating temperature required exceeds those of Aluminum. Also recommended for heated platens on molding presses as Bronze can withstand more pounds per square inch of pressure.
