Tanzania is the only place where it is fond, which makes it rarer. The american gem trade association chose tanzanite as a december birthstone. Tanzanite is noted for its remarkably strong trichroism, appearing alternately sapphire blue, violet and burgundy. Heating removes the brown or burgundy colour component to produce a stronger purplish-blue colour.
