Early in the morning, a jeep will drop you at Lamayuru, also known as “Place of Liberation “ where you may seek blessings in an old and impressive monastery. The trail to Alchi diverges at Fautu-La. As you descend from the pass, Mani Walls and Stupas emerge in the isolated scenery of the Himalayas. Legend has it that the area was once under a big lake, hence the moon-like landscape on the eastern part of the village. On arriving at Alchi, you will notice the distinctively beautiful Tibetan-Kashmiri art which recounts of an era long gone. “The painters and sculptors from Kashmir brought with them a highly sophisticated form of art, which was deeply rooted in the classic Sanskrit texts of India. The masters from Kashmir would have also trained local artists and there was a marvelous blending of the local idioms with the developed styles coming from Kashmir,” says the historian, Binoy K Behl.
