Bandhej Salwar Kameez and Dupatta or Bandhani shalwar qamis is the Art of royalty - The tie-dyed fabrics of Gujarat and Rajasthan are perhaps the best produced in India. They are also known as Bandhej. Tie and dye or bandhej is a technique actually from Rajasthan and Gujarat. The colors traditionally are vibrant; yellow, black, red and green being the predominant ones. This technique is used on lighter shades of browns, turquoise, blue and pink giving a stunning effect. The technique though simple is quite time consuming and tedious. A single piece of Bandhani salwar suits dupatta with intricate bandhej design, takes more than a week to prepare. In the process of tie and dye of bandhani or bandhej salwar kameez, each section is carefully dipped in paint and tied again to bring yet another contrast in color. Usually women are assigned to the fine craft of tying while the men prepare the dye. Bandhej patterns depict birds, animals and human figures.

Bandhej or Bandhani is the Art of royalty - The tie-dyed fabrics of Gujarat are perhaps the best produced in India. Bandhni sarees are created by dyeing the cloth in such a manner that many small resist-dyed ‘spots’ produce elaborate patterns over the fabric. The traditional bandhani saree market has shrunk however, because of the rise of low-cost silk-screened imitations and most modern bandhani sarees are made with larger designs and fewer ties than in the past. There are varieties of bandhej saree available in two contrasting colors, with borders, end-pieces and one or more large central medallion called a pomcha or padma (lotus flower). Red and black is the most common color combination but other pairs of colors are also found.
