Oil Orris In Tuscany and other parts of Italy large areas are given over to the cultivation of three species of iris. Iris flormtina, I. germanica, and /. pallida, the roots of which when dried and powdered have a delicate odour of violets, and are widely used in the preparation of the violet powders of commerce. These plants are also cultivated in other parts of Europe, in Morocco, India, etc., but Italy is. still the chief source of supply. The fragrant violet odour of orris is not perceptible in the freshly-gathered roots, but gradually develops in them after drying, probably through some chemical process analogous to that^ which takes place in the development of the odour in oil of almonds. The earliest essences of violets consisted of alcoholic extracts of the powdered root, but as these also contained inert substances simultaneously extracted from the root, they lacked the purity of odour of a solution of the essential oil. The substance obtained by distilling powdered orris root with steam consists of a semi-solid mixture of the essential oil and fatty constituents of the root carried over mechanically. By subsequent treatment the solid inert parts may be separated, leaving a liquid volatile oil in which is concentrated the violet-scented constituents of the root. This product has an intense and, extremely delicate odour of the fresh violet and fetches a high price in the market. It is used commer- cially in the preparation of the finest scents. ROMAN CHAMOMILE OIL Botanical name : Anthemis nobilis L Syn. Chamaemelum nobile L. Family : Asteraceae / Compositae Introduction Roman chamomile ( Anthemis nobilis) also known as English chamomile, is a tall perennial herb cultivated in England, Belgium and france. It grows all over Europe and exists in the form of various subapecies in German, roman and English as lawn variety or wilb chamomile. The flowers are solitary , possessing a yellow, convex disc and white rays. Roman chamomile grows well in any good fairly dry soil with full exposure to sun and temperate climate is preferred. The crop and requires careful handling. The flowers are harvested after every two week . A seasons�s harvest consists of sbout five or six pickings in each field. In dry, sunny weather, the flowers are very beautiful, large and pure white, whereas during rainy, danp weather, it appears grayish or rusty. Two varieties are under cultivation, one is known as white-headed or double flowered Roman chamomile. The other variety is yellow- headed as such they exhibit considerable morphological differences despite the widespresd use of these plants in popular medicine and therapeutic applications 10. The oil extracted from whoie plant yields 0.20-0.35% oil while high grade oil from flowers has 0.60-0.80% yield. The flowers are large and white with yellow centres and possess strong pleasant odour. Uses The oil exhibits sweet, herbal, green woody odour character. It is used in high class perfumery to impart rich, long- lasting odour notes. It is also used for flavouring of black tea.
