While the flowers of osmanthus range from silver-white (Osmanthus fragrans Lour. var. latifolius Mak.) to gold-orange (Osmanthus fragrans Lour. var. thunbergii Mak.) to reddish (Osmanthus fragrans Lour. var. aurantiacus Mak.), the extract (alcohol absolute) is usually prepared from the gold-orange flowers. Osmanthus absolute is very expensive (~U.S. $4000.00 per kilogram) and accordingly is used in only the most expensive perfumes and flavors.

Source: Osmanthus fragrans is grown in India. Extraction: Osmanthus Absolute Oil is extracted with alcohol from the concrete. Aroma: Osmanthus Absolute Oil has a fruity, leathery, slightly smokey, sweet, floral and narcotic scent. Fragrance note: Top. Properties: Osmanthus Absolute Oil is antimicrobial, expectorant, detoxifying and stomachic. The aromatherapy properties of Osmanthus Absolute Oil are both soothing and comforting, lending to it's use in essential oil blends for pain relief, meditation and yoga. The ethanol extract and essential oil of Osmanthus fragrans (Lour.) family (Oleaccae) were evaluated for antimicrobial action on Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhi and Shigella dysentery by using agar disc diffusion method. Uses: Massage, baths, vaporization, and may be added to base emollients. It is an ingredient in high-class perfumery and can also be used to fragrance candles, potpourri and room fresheners. Blends well with: Frangipani Absolute, Ginger, Imortelle Absolute, Lemon, Lime, Linden Absolute, Lotus Absolute, Mandarin, Orange, Rose Otto Absolute, Sandalwood, Spikenard and Vanilla Absolute. Caution: Always dilute Osmanthus Absolute Oil to 5% or less in a carrier oil before applying to the skin.
