The so-called " Indian grass " {Andro- pogon nardus), which covers extensive tracts in Ceylon, yields, on distillation with steam, an essential oil, which owes its name to the fact that it contains a large pro- portion of the compound citronellal. This oil, being exceedingly cheap, is used in enormous quantities for scenting common soaps, and in the manufacture of coarse scents, and is also added as an adulterant to more expensive oils.
