In veterinary medicine virginiamycin is intended for use in broiler chickens for the treatment of necrotic enteritis, a common frequently fatal gastrointestinal disease in poultry caused by toxigenic strains of Clostridium perfringens Virginiamycin is a peptolide antibiotic consisting of a predominant M fraction (C28H35N3O7) and the lesser S fraction (C43H49NO10). The S and M fractions have bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities when they are used separately and together, respectively. Virginiamycin is not known to have synergistic activity with other classes of antibiotics. Virginiamycin inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 23S ribosomal subunit and blocking the translation process, with no effect on transcription. It is not commonly used to treat bacterial infections in domestic animals despite possessing a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity.
