Geotextile Pipeline Weights
Geotextile Pipeline Weights is a patented system of weighting pipelines with high density aggregate gravel filled permeable geotextile sacks that are designed to either set-on or strap-on and straddle the pipeline in order to achieve buoyancy control. They consist of two lobes with multiple chambers, lying on opposite sides of the pipeline, which are secured by connector straps that fit tightly over the saddle of the pipeline. SCOPE OF APPLICATION In geographical areas having little or no foundational support, for instance, rivers, lakes, foreshore, swamps, marshes and areas having high water tables, installed pipelines are weighted down with ballast of some kind including concrete weights, concrete coating and clamp-on weights in order to achieve negative-buoyancy of pipelines. But such emplacements are often subject to hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces which can manifest in the displacement of pipeline from its original position, thus rupturing the outer coated surface of the pipeline and leading to adverse catastrophic failure and financial repercussions. Geotextile Pipeline Weights resolves or atleast reduces the impact of all such problems set-out above, thus being an excellent replacement of all traditional pipeline weighting systems. They can more effectively achieve negative-buoyancy of pipelines, and at the same time, be cost-effective by reducing the high costs associated with traditional weighting systems. Furthermore, Geotextile Weights being soft and abrasion-resistant avoids corrosion and prevents damage to the outer coated surface of the pipeline during installation and also during shifting of pipeline due to hydrostatic and other adverse conditions. It involves: i) Filling the Weights with gravel from a local source. ii) Distributing the Weights along the Right of Way. iii) Lowering the Weights over the pipeline, and back-fill. 3. Construction period is shortened. B. ECONOMICAL WEIGHTING SYSTEM 1. Geotextile Weights can be filled with gravel from a local source which saves handling and transportation costs. 2. Geotextile Weights do not require any heavy-duty equipment for hoisting, so equipment cost is saved. 3. The "effective weight" of Geotextile Weights under water often exceeds that of equivalent concrete weights or cement press products due to less water being displaced. Hence, less weighting is required, so the procurement cost is cut down. 4. Leftover, Geotextile Weights can be folded up and put on a shelf until next project. C. SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY 1. Geotextile Weights are made of polypropylene fabric, with features such as corrosion-resistant, anti-acid, non-pollutant to water quality, which is a kind of reinforced material with high durability. 2. The Weights made from non-biodegradable polypropylene fabric is filled with local gravel, so it is as permeable as the ballast used to fill it, allowing groundwater and cathodic protection an easy path. 3. The Weights are soft buoyancy control, allowing the pipeline the ability to move slightly while still maintaining negative buoyancy and coating protection. 4. Casing Insulator is a patented series of polyethylene insulators that are universally applicable in the installation of pipelines when the carrier pipe runs inside a casing. They are used to support the coated pipe within a tubular casing, to electrically insulate the pipe from the tubular casing and to prevent damage to the coated surface of the pipe when the pipe is installed within the casing. SCOPE OF APPLICATION When the pipeline is buried in the ground, for instance, at underground road, river, railway and highway crossings, the pipeline is generally further protected by being enclosed within a tubular casing. The pipeline is supported within the casing by a Casing Insulator. The Casing Insulator, in addition to its supportive function, electrically insulates the pipeline from the casing. This insulative function is necessary for the cathodic protection of the pipeline, and also, for preventing electric current loss when the pipeline is used as a conduit for electrical cables. Furthermore, the Casing Insulator prevents damage to the outer coated surface of the pipeline when the pipeline is drawn through the casing during installation. GENERAL FEATURES Casing Insulator is a high-density, polyethylene product, injection molded to provide low cost insulator of highest quality. It offers the following general features: (i) Easy Installation: Minimal coefficient of friction of the polyethylene material allows the carrier pipe to be more easily pulled through the casing thus helping in easy installation of the carrier pipe within the casing. (ii) Cathodic Protection: Insulating properties like excellent dielectric resistance and low moisture absorption of the polyethylene material used ensures of meting with all the requirements of cathodic protection and yielding minimal electric current loss. (iii) Coating Protection: High impact strength and excellent abrasion resistance of the polyethylene material prevents damage to the coated surface of the pipe when the pipe is installed within the casing and ensures long time resistance from chemical corrode minimizing cold flow of the coating on the carrier pipe. (iv) Concentricity: Wide range of skid heights ensures the concentricity of the carrier pipe in the casing. RECOMMENDED SPACING The general “rule of thumb” of the pipeline industry is to space Casing Insulators 8 to 15 ft apart. The recommended spacing for our Casing Insulator is to position two of the insulators at each end of the casing and then space the insulators 6 to 8 ft apart. Actual spacing may vary depending on local regulations and design specifications.
