Petroleum coke (often abbreviated pet coke or petcoke) is a carbonaceous solid delivered from oil refinery coker units or other cracking processes. Coking processes that can be employed for making petcoke include contact coking, fluid coking, flexicoking and delayed coking. Other coke has traditionally been delivered from coal.   This coke can either be fuel grade (high in sulfur and metals) or anode grade (low in sulfur and metals). The raw coke directly out of the coker is often referred to as green coke. In this context, “green” means unprocessed. The further processing of green coke by calcining in a rotary kiln removes residual volatile hydrocarbons from the coke. The calcined petroleum coke can be further processed in an anode baking oven in order to produce anode coke of the desired shape and physical properties. The anodes are mainly used in the aluminium and steel industry.   Petcoke is over 90 percent carbon and emits 5 to 10 percent more carbon dioxide (CO2) than coal on a per-unit-of-energy basis when it is burned. As petcoke has a higher energy content, petcoke emits between 30 and 80 percent more CO2 than coal per unit of weight. Calcined Petroleum Coke (CPC) is obtained by Calcining (Heating in presence of controlled Oxygen supply) Raw Petroleum Coke (RPC) at temperature as high as 1400oC. RPC is the end product of the Oil refining process and derived from the fractional distillation of Petroleum Crude in delayed Cokers. CPC is mainly used in the Aluminium extraction, Graphite Electrode manufacturing, steel melting, Titanium Dioxide and other Carbon consuming industries. Manufacturing Process : Raw Petroleum Coke (RPC) received from the Refinery is sized and fed into a Kiln which may be rotary or Vertical shaft kiln. The coke gradually moves towards the lower end of the kiln and during its movement down the Kiln all moisture and volatile matters present in the RPC are driven off. It is a exothermic process with the burning of hydrocarbons present in the RPC providing the heat required for Calcination. The product received at the end of the process is a highly Electrically conductive Carbon called Calcined Petroleum Coke.

Raw Coke is Calcined to develop specific properties to make it suitable for industrial purposes. The Calcination (of Raw Coke) involves controlled heating of the Raw Coke to the temperature in the range of 1250°C to 1350°C. This process drives off moisture, hydrocarbons and other volatile matter present in the Raw Coke is burnt off - thereby densified the particles and changes the electrical properties from insulating to conducting. Raw Coke after Calcination is known as Calcined Petroleum Coke. At India Carbon, Calcination is performed in an oil fired rotary kiln with suitable refractories. Raw Coke crushed into lumps is fed through Conveyor System to the slightly elevated end of the rotary kiln. The coke progresses towards the firing end of the kiln and during it's passage down the kiln any moisture present is driven off by the counter current of hot combustion gasses. Volatile (Hydrocarbon) present in the Raw Coke also evolves and burn as the temperature increases, providing additional heat energy to the calcination process.
