U-cup depends upon contact made by its flexible lips. The solid section at the heel of the cup is generally narrower than the packing groove width and does not come into contact with the groove base and the adjacent part until pressure is applied. Consequently, when installed, the packing is slightly pre-loaded. U-cup packings have low frictional qualities and are completely automatic in action. Due to their design, they can be assembled satisfactorily in glands which have variations in cross sectional dimensions, thus permitting more liberal manufacturing tolerances. U-cups packings are also very successful in applications where it is desirable to reduce excessive packing friction.

The bonded seal is a metal washer with a vulcanized rubber insert for use in high pressure applications where other means of sealing are unsuitable. Bonded seals are now available in self centralising form, which eliminates seal offset and makes for easier installation. Dowty seals are used for making pipe joints in hydraulic systems leak free. They are designated according to the size of the pipe thread where it is used.

The distinctive and exclusive hinge-like action of each Chevron ring permits immediate reaction even to minor pressure changes. Each individual lip of Chevron packing set independently reacts to pressure and automatically effect a seal. The multiple lip configurations automatically distribute pressure and effectively seal along the shaft. The seal is a combination of a Gland Ring, center V-Ring & pressure ring or header. The center ring is the main seal being flexible enough to retain high & low pressure, whereas the base seal support the center ring from getting extruded against high pressures. The pressure ring helps in retaining the center ring profile& distributing pressure equally.
