...moreAbout Bentonite
Bentonite is a mineral clay made of aluminum silicate, which formed millions of years ago from volcanic ash. Occurring in various locations around the world, bentonite is named for the discovery of vast deposits of the clay near Fort Benton, Wyoming. The properties of bentonite have given it the name, âThe mineral with 1,000 uses.â In fact, bentonite has myriad commercial, industrial, and personal applications, making it a most useful mineral. Appearance : Dried bentonite comes as a fine powder or is pressed into pellets. When re-hydrated, bentonite has an extremely fine texture, a velvety consistency. It has a gray to cream color, which does not stain. The material is odorless and tasteless. Formation : Bentonite formed during the Cretaceous period in history, over 100 million years ago. Fine ash from the frequent eruptions of volcanoes, particularly in the area of what is now Yellowstone in Wyoming, fell into great inland seas, settling to the bottom. This created a sediment that over millions of years formed a type of clay of hydrous silicate of alumina, more commonly known now as bentonite. Commercial and Industrial Uses : Drilling companies frequently use bentonite as a lubricant mud for drilling wells. The clay also works as an effective binder in the production of other products such as iron ore taconite pellets. Bentonite forms a good seal for the bottom of ponds and reservoirs, irrigation ditches and sewage and drainage pools. It is an ingredient in cleansers, polishes and detergents. The cosmetic, paper, paint and ceramic industries all use bentonite. In agriculture, animal feeds are pelletized using bentonite. Cat litter is largely made of this clay due to its absorbent properties. Personal Uses : Externally, bentonite is frequently used for mud packs and facials. Some people soak in bentonite mixed in bath water, supposedly for its detoxifying effects. Still others use bentonite internally as a purported detoxifying and cleansing agent in the digestive tract, a stimulant for proper liver function, an immune system stimulant and for other health-related applications. Talk to your doctor before taking bentonite internally to treat any condition.
