GC4 is a variety of cumin that is known for its high essential oil content and yield potential. It is a dwarf variety that grows up to a height of 30-40 cm and is suitable for cultivation in different agro-climatic conditions. If you are planning to cultivate cumin seeds for the purpose of commercial production, here are some basic guidelines that you may find useful: Soil and Climate: Cumin requires a warm and dry climate with a temperature range of 20-30°C. It grows well in sandy loam soils that are well-drained and have good fertility. The soil pH should be between 6.5-8.3. Land Preparation: The land should be prepared well in advance by plowing, harrowing, and leveling. The soil should be thoroughly mixed with organic manure or compost to improve its fertility. Seed Selection: The seeds of GC4 variety should be obtained from a reputable source to ensure their purity and quality. The seeds should be treated with a fungicide and insecticide before sowing. Sowing: Cumin seeds are sown directly in the field at a depth of 2-3 cm during the months of October-November. The spacing between rows should be 25-30 cm, while the distance between plants should be 10-15 cm. Irrigation: Cumin requires a moderate amount of water for its growth and development. Irrigation should be done at an interval of 10-15 days during the early stages and 20-25 days during the later stages. Fertilizer: Cumin requires a balanced dose of NPK fertilizer for its proper growth and yield. The recommended dose is 40-60 kg N, 30-40 kg P2O5, and 20-30 kg K2O per hectare. Weed Control: Weed control is essential for the proper growth and development of cumin. Hand weeding and hoeing should be done as and when required. Harvesting: Cumin plants mature in about 120-140 days after sowing. The crop is harvested when the fruits turn brown and start to split. The plants are uprooted and dried in the sun for a few days. The dried plants are threshed to separate the seeds from the pods. Storage: The cumin seeds should be stored in a cool and dry place in moisture-proof containers to prevent spoilage and insect infestation. These are some basic guidelines for cultivating cumin seeds of GC4 variety. However, it is always advisable to seek expert advice and guidance before starting any agricultural activity.
