White fiber comes from young coconuts and is mostly used to make ropes and fishing nets since the younger fiber is more resistant to salt water. The brown fiber comes from mature coconuts that have a layer of lignin deposited in the cellulose walls of the fiber during its maturation, which darkens its appearance and makes the fiber resistant to rotting.    Extracting the Fiber : Coir Fiber has been an important source of revenue particularly for India and Sri Lanka which currently produce 90% of the world supply and well over 250,000 tons.
