Permanent residency refers to a person’s visa status i.e. The person is allowed to reside indefinitely within a country of which he or she is not a citizen. A person with such status is known as a permanent resident. Usually permanent residents may apply for citizenship, get most social benefits, live, work or study anywhere abroad. However permanent residents do not have the right to vote or run for a political office or hold some job that needs high level security clearance.
