Aamad is a 'full-time' dance studio, aiming to create a retreat where art enthusiasts can interact; and to promote a culture to appreciate performing arts.
Aamad, from the Persian word meaning 'entry'; the first introduction of spoken rhythmic pattern or bol into a KATHAK performance; the dramatic entrance of the dancer on stage. The Aamad corresponds somewhat to the ‘alaap’ in Indian Music, in that it establishes the atmosphere.
Talking about Kathak, and also other classical art forms; ever notice that they are not as enthusiastically pursued by the youth, as let's say, belly dance, (no, no, don't get us wrong, it's not like we are against ANY form). A big reason is because it's just not part of 'youth' culture. Also there is a 'serious' tag attached to it, in that if you are looking to just take a break from your hectic schedule, you will rather take a salsa class, than do something you presume to be difficult, time-consuming, etc.. Moreover, there is also this great divide if we look closely. Institutes are either teaching students purely western forms, or purely indian classical ones, so even if you were interested, you would never actually happen to see what a classical dance class would be like.
This is where we step in. AAMAD strives to break this very mould; to make classical art forms accessible, only as demanding as any other class, and bring to you classical as well as contemporary forms, and Indian as well as western forms, all under the same roof. In doing so we wish to create a single united culture where all art forms can flourish. So join us whether you are a dancer, or not; let's mix it all up and grow a little. :)
We currently provide training in the following art forms:
Kathak: Tue, Fri
Kalaripayattu (The ancient indian martial art): Tue, Fri 6:30 pm.
T'ai Chi (Healing form): Sun & Thu 6:30 am
Belly dance... coming soon.
