PropertiesFerro Silicon Zirconium is the alloy of Iron Silicon and Zirconium produced by direct reduction of zircon sands in electric arc furnaces at high temperature. This alloy is used as Zirconium additive in steel melt, which reacts with Oxygen, Nitrogen and Sulphur. Zirconium has been used in steel making additive for over more than 40 years. But this alloy (FeSiZr) is still today the lowest cost source of Zr available as steel additive. The specification of FeSiZr supplied by Minex is given belowProductionWhen added in molten steel bath, it dissolved fast and Zirconium combines chemically with Oxygen, Nitrogen and Sulphur in the order named. The quantity of Zirconium addition per ton of steel required to improve steel properties has not been found to depend on the sulphur content as it is with RareXEarth metal addition. Consequently, it is more economical to use Zirconium and RareXEarth in steels with sulphur contents of 0.02% or more. Thus the amounts Zirconium to be added, depends more on the Nitrogen and Oxygen content than on Sulphur content. To be effective, the addition of Zirconium has to be sufficient to leave more free Zr after the precipitation of practically all the Nitrogen content as Zirconium Nitride and Zirconium Carbonitride. The addition of Zirconium can be made in Aluminium Killed steel as UsesFeSiZr is used to scavenge impurities (Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sulphur) or modify inclusion through the formation of complex sulphides and oxysulphides. ZrS is significantly more stable than MnS in steel. Therefore, if enough free zirconium is available during the early stages of solidification of a steel ingot, ZrS will form and prevent the formation of MnS. ZrS is much more refractory than MnS and practically non - deformable during hot rolling while, in aluminum killed steels, MnS produces long flat stringer inclusions in hot rolled plate and strip. The efficacy of Zirconium additions will therefore be measured not by the amount of residual "acid soluble" metal which remains, but by the extent to which inclusions are beneficially modified. It also raises the yield/tensile ratio and improves weldability through the reduction of under bead cracking and the elimination of porosity. In high alloys steels, Zirconium increases hardness but decreases ductility. CEMGUARD® Microsilica (Silica Fume) is a by-product of producing silicon metal or ferrosilicon alloys in smelters using electric arc furnaces. It is a grey coloured powder, pozzolanic in nature. It is sourced from a single, dedicated factory in China and produced under strict quality control to maintain the highest levels of product consistency, and ensure minimum standard deviation. In concrete, it fills the space between cement grains - commonly referred to as particle packing or micro-filling. It also reacts with the calcium hydroxide from cement to form an additional binder called calcium silicate hydrate. Both these effects enhance the physical and chemical properties of concrete. CEMGUARD® Microsilica is available in two dry powder forms - densified and undensified. Densified Microsilica is most popularly used in concrete construction. It is produced by tumbling undensified Microsilica particles in a silo, to form agglomerates with bulk densities between 500-700 KG/m3. Undensified Microsilica (bulk density between 200-350 KG/m3) is only used in specialized applications as it is not economical to transport because of its low bulk density. Quality-controlled and consistent Microsilica with uniform colour, and sourced from a single, dedicated factory is the key to maximizing its value in various applications. The production facilities of CEMGUARD® Microsilica have an in-house laboratory for testing of key parameters such as retention over SiO2 content, loss-on-ignition and moisture as per standard codes, while bulk density is controlled during the densification process. CEMGUARD® Microsilica has unique properties that benefit both fresh and hardened concrete. Its key advantages include increased strength and durability as well as enhanced rheology of concrete. CEMGUARD® Microsilica can be used in concrete in two ways - as an addition (generally 8-15% by mass of cement) to enhance properties of the fresh and/or hardened concrete or as a partial cement replacement (5-10% by mass of cement) to maintain the 28-day compressive strength at lower cement content (with associated environmental benefits) while reducing the heat of hydration and improving durability. Applications of CEMGUARD® Microsilica encompass shotcrete, high-strength & very high strength concrete, triple blend with fly ash, low-heat concrete, tunnels, marine & coastal, tall buildings, dams, floors & pavements, mortars & grouts and self-compacting concrete.
