In radio frequency drying, material is exposed to an electronic field that alternates about 40,000,000 times per second. When the field alternates, the water molecules in the material also alternate. The resulting friction causes the water to heat uniformly throughout the product. Radio frequency drying can save energy because only the product itself is heated. Another benefit is that no equipment warm up or cool down is necessary. The technology typically replaces process steam heat. The RF Web Dryer rapidly removes moisture from the web at low temperatures and prevents the migration of coating solids caused by conventional drying which increases web strength and product quality. Benefits PREFERENTIAL HEATING: Selectively dries products at the wettest sections of the web. The product output will be uniform in moisture content throughout, regardless of the non-uniformity going in. INCREASES PRODUCTION THROUGHPUT: Providing instant ON/OFF control, the RF Web Dryer eliminates the heat-up and cool-down times required by conventional dryers. MINIMIZE DRYING TIMES: Rapid volumetric heating eliminates the long dwell time required by conventional heating minimizing the quantity of product in the drying cycle and reduces changeover time. NO ACCUMULATION ROLLERS: This dryer eliminates the need for accumulation rollers required by festooned convection and infrared type dryers and saves floor space by generally requiring one-fifth of the floor space needed for hot-air and IR dryers as well as lowering maintenance costs. Features Energy applied by radio waves at a frequency of 40.68 MHz. Volumetric heating keeps the temperature low and uniform throughout the web to prevent overheating. Barriers to Market Acceptance price risk of failure benefits not understood priorities not on benefits of new technology lack of technology awareness Applications Radio frequency drying is often used to dry crackers, cookies, and other snack foods after they've been baked. It can also be used to dry ceramics, synthetic foam, textiles, water-based inks and adhesives in paper products, and fiberglass yarn. Other applications include sterilizing bagged materials and preheating thermoset plastic molding compounds. Drying municipal sludge and timber is being investigated.

Batch Type Dryers uses a perforated belt to transfer feed materials through the dryer. Heated air is either passed under and through, or over and through the belt and product bed before being reheated and re-circulated. Units are normally multi zoned and may have differing airflow's in successive zones. Additionally each zone may use a different temperature profile and control. Saturated or close to saturated air is exhausted from the dryer via a central exhaust duct. Batch Type Dryers may be multi pass units, in which the feed is transferred from one belt to another belt below it by gravity. These dryers are usually two or three pass machines. Additionally certain conveyor dryers, such as those used in vegetable dehydration have multiple belts in line, and the feed is transferred from one belt to another. Feeding / discharge Manual, batch, automatic and continuous. Vibrators, oscillating feeders, gravity chutes Feed Characteristics Large granules, agglomerates, pellets, preformed (extruded) products (pressure agglomerates), small solid particles, large solid particles, agricultural products. Low to high feed rates Heat Source Steam, electrical, coal, liquid fuels, or gas Exposure Mostly Direct. Flow can be through the bed (under to over, over to under, or both), cross, counter current or co-current. Indirect systems available for certain products. Residence time Highly Controllable. Residence time can be altered by varying the feed and discharge rates affecting the bed depth. Belt can be slowed and modulated. Extraction Normally central induced. Re-circulating fans used in each zone. Exhaust connected to common header Dust Collection Typically little required. For fine product a central bag house is sometimes used. Control PLC control for each zone, infrequently solid state controllers. System controls on above bed temperature. Can modulate energy. Benefits Very intimate contact with air/gas stream Good for heat sensitive products and products requiring long residence times Energy efficient due to recycling of process air Multiple zones offer flexibility for temperature and process control Excellent transfer of energy Can vary flows between zones Gentle handling of product Self contained with distributed foundation loading Unit can have integral cooling section. Limitations High temperature units can be troublesome Heater can clog on carryover Belt tracking can be problematic Belt may clog, requires frequent cleaning Loss of fimes through perforations on flights or belt.

Copra (Batch type) dryers are used for drying raw coconuts in one lot as a batch. The raw coconut pieces along with their shells are loaded in a chamber over a platform having perforated sheet or weld mesh bottom to permit easy flow of hot air through materials. The hot air is blown into the plenum chamber below the platform by the powerful blower of the hot air generator and it passes through the coconuts extracting moisture from it. The moisture escapes through the opening on the top of chamber. Batch type dryers are very popular in India for making high quality edible white copra from well matured coconuts. It is approved by the Coconut Development Board of India. The copra making time is reduced to 24 hours of drying instead of usual 5 or 6 days by sun drying - The fuel used for drying can be coconut shell which is a By-Product in copra making or any other normal fuel like copra shell, coconut fibre, electricity, firewood etc. As the hot air generator of dryer has a heat exchanger, it removes smoke and flue gas and only pure hot air is used for drying. Hence the quality of dried product is very high. The dried coconuts are scooped from their shell and are passed for cutting after 36 hours of heating in Drier.
