Stainless steel grade 430 is a non-hardenable steel containing straight chromium, and belongs to the ferritic group of steels. This steel is known for its good corrosion resistance and formability, coupled with practical mechanical properties. It can be used in certain chemical applications due to its resistance to nitric acid. Grade 430F stainless steel is usually provided in bar form to be used in automatic screw machines. Grade 434 has similar properties as grade 430, although it is a molybdenum-bearing version. The molybdenum content enhances its corrosion resistance

430F Stainless Steel is a free machining version of 430 Stainless Steel. Primarily comprised of Chromium, small amounts of Manganese, Silicon, Carbon, Phosphorus, Sulfur and Molybdenum can be found in its chemistry. Stainless 304 is non-heat treatable, and is intended for structural parts in applications where corrosive conditions are not severe. Most commonly used in solenoids, Diversified Metals’ 430F is certified as ‘solenoid quality’ and meets a wide variety of specifications. Type 430F should be considered when making machined articles from a 17% chromium steel. Type 430F does not harden by heat treatment. It has been used in automatic screw machines for parts requiring good corrosion resistance such as aircraft parts and gears.

Type 431 is designed to provide improved corrosion resistance and toughness in a quench-hardenable stainless steel. It has been used for parts such as aircraft fasteners and fittings and should be considered for structural members exposed to marine atmosphere. Mechanical properties include excellent toughness (impact strength) at relatively high hardness level. It offers the best corrosion resistance of the conventional martensitic stainless grades. Considerable quantities of this steel have been produced to MIL-S-18732, and AMS-5628.
