PNEUMATICS THE USE OF PNEUMATIC SEALS - INTRODUCTION Pneumatics, which is one area of fluid technology, is the science of the behaviour of gases. The term pneumatics, which is derived from the Greek pneuma, is today mostly considered to be the transfer of energy by compressed air. Pneumatic drives and actuations, used to an increasing extent for the mechanisation and automation of production processes, are essentially constructed from valves and cylinders. The working of pneumatic equipment requires the sealing of volumes of air under pressure. Pneumatic seals are divided into cylinder seals and valve seals. The differentiated sub-division of valve seals, similar to the classification used for cylinder seals, would not be sensible. Valve seals are special seals which conform to the differing valve constructions of individual manufacturers. HYDRAULIC SEALS USE OF HYDRAULIC SEALS Different requirements and loads in numerous instances have led to the development of various types of seals. Hydraulic seals can be categorised according to their function and design Moreover, hydraulic seals are sub-divided into seals with a symmetrical cross-section and such with an asymmetrical cross-section. Asymmetrical seals are designed with interference on the entire axial width of the static diameter to achieve a firm seat in the groove. Therefore, the correct pre-load on the dynamic diameter is only reached after fitting into the housing SHAFT SEALS These Shaft Seals prevent the excessive wear and heat buildup at the shaft often caused by internal pressure. Economical seals are reliable at pressures up to 300 psi. Built with touch fluoroelastomer sealing element, strong metal case and large, pressure-activated PTFE anti-friction element. Can be used in a broad range of equipment, in rotary or reciprocating motion.
...more'O' Rings
‘O' rings play a vital role in making the equipment, in which these are used, leak proof. ‘O' rings are engineered from a variety of elastomers for different applications. Some of the critical application are viz. Cylinder-liner rings for diesel engines and sealing systems in aircraft engines. 'O' rings can be designed for both static as well as dynamic applications. We have the facility to design an 'O' ring as also to manufacture it in bulk as per customers' specifications. The following parameters are required to select the right material for the 'O' ring as also to determine its correct size :- Washers can be custom manufactured in different sizes and shapes at no extra cost for practically any purpose. Our range of washers are well accepted by clients for its superior make and high quality. 1. Fluid to be sealed. 2. Nature of application. 3. Lubricant used. 4. Working temperature. 5. Minimum and maximum and working fluid pressure. 6. Speed of shaft or frequency of reciprocating parts. 7. Type of finish on metal parts. O’ RINGS 1. Used predominantly for sealing of stationary machine parts against liquid and gaseous media.2. Available for stock in all standard sizes and in various qualities of material and of material hardness.3. ‘O’ Rings for special uses in particular dimensions, special forms and special material mixtures.4. Support rings, spiral back-up rings and USIT-Rings in standard versions and customer-specific versions. STATIC SEALING ‘O’ Rings can be used for sealing static parts of machinery, i.e., for static sealing. With correct installation and proper choice of material, pressures up to 1000 bar and more can be sealed. The dimensions of the housing depend on the thickness of the ring used and on the given application. The hardness of the O-Ring material should not be less than 80 Shore A for pulsating pressures. The hardness of the material is chosen depending on the prevailing pressure and on the specified tolerances (gap widths). We recommend the following grades: DYNAMIC SEALING With dynamic sealing, a distinction is made between the use of O-Rings in hydraulics and pneumatics. On account of frictional resistance, the deformation is kept smaller in dynamic sealing than in static sealing. Good lubrication by the medium to be sealed in the case of hydraulics, or by an oil atomizer in the case of pneumatics, reduces frictional losses and wear. We recommend the following grades: TOLERANCE FOR ‘O’ RINGS O-Rings are made to very close tolerances. The indicated values apply only to O-Rings made from standard material. Materials of different base (elastomers) polymers or different hardness, deviations from the listed values can occur due to different shrinkage behavior, although these are normally so small that they have no effect on the intended performance of the O-Ring. INSTALLATION OF ‘O’ RINGS The entire system should be cleaned to remove dirt and fabrication detritus before the installation of O-Rings. O-Rings should not be pulled over sharp edges, stepped shafts, screw threads, grooves and the like. It is advisable to cover sharp edges during fitting in order to avoid damage to the O-Ring. The O-Ring must not be allowed to become twisted in its locating groove. Short-term stretching during fitting is permissible. Time must be allowed however for the ring to undergo elastic recovery after fitting. Care is necessary when fitting piston seals or shaft seals having external diameters below 10 mm because of the percentage enlargement. The use of a fitting mandrel or a fitting sleeve is recommended.

...moreDiaphragm Pump
Diaphragms made from a highly elastic elastomer material have the role of forming a sealed yet easily mobile partition between two volumetric areas. As regulator diaphragm they transform the preset pressure from a control medium into a rod force for the activation of switchgear, of control and regulator instrument or of indicator equipment. As pump diaphragms they inversely convert a rod force into a pressure within the medium to be conveyed. Finally, they form as a separator diaphragm a sealing barrier with the lowest intrinsic resistance between two spaces having pressure at virtual equilibrium in an accumulator. A diaphragm is commonly installed in pneumatic brake cylinders as a sealing component, between piston and housing. DISADVANTAGES The universal application of diaphragms is governed by certain limitations owing to technical reasons regarding production and for design reasons: The maximum possible operating pressure and the attainable stroke length are restricted The effective diameter is always smaller than the housing diameter and in certain cases is not constant in the working range Diaphragms offer advantages over conventional sealing systems : Technically, they are absolutely tight. Lip seals always need a film of lubricant in the contact zone and as a result certain leakage occurs Diaphragm's work is practically maintenance-free No breakaway forces are needed when starting up or with a change of direction of movement. No rest point appears in the working area when the design is correct Diaphragms distinguish themselves by their rolling motion, thus low wear and a correspondingly long working life Diaphragms essentially place lower demands on dimensional stability and surface quality of the surrounding metal parts than do lip seals, and they often enable substantial cost savings This versatile, flexible engineering component comes into use in nearly all sectors of industry. Aerospace technology, foodstuffs, automotive and ancillary industry, general mechanical engineering and water fittings are only some of the business areas in which a diaphragm gives useful service. The main applications are pumps, compressors and valves as well as accumulators and bladders. Requests which we encounter daily: Pumps should transport a medium without leaking and should be able to meter this medium to the most precise extent. Actuating processes in valves have to flow as much as possible without large resistance. Braking processes are controlled via pressurized air in heavy goods vehicles. Actuating pressures from controlling media govern display equipment, switchgear and regulating apparatus. Various types of media should transmit precise pressures separately from one another. Hydraulic accumulator has to maintain pressures at the same level and dampen vibrations. The solution : Elastomeric diaphragms as the problem solver! Pumps, Actuators, Brakes, Regulating, Separating, Accumulators? Diaphragms made out of elastomer help with the solving of these complex tasks; as, for example, environmental regulation being complied with through the use of diaphragms in pumps. Also, even aggressive media in industrial valves can be controlled, without leakage, by the employment of diaphragms using high quality materials. Innovative technology (ABS, EBS etc.) for heavy goods vehicles braking systems function with diaphragms. Likewise, space craft are kept on the right course with diaphragms. ...moreBellows
Bellows are protective components consisting of one moveable bellow part and two connector areas for fixing. Bellows protect axially-moving bars and machine parts from contamination, water spray, dust and weathering, etc. Bellow part and connector areas have, according to operational instance, the most varied geometric forms (for example single and multiple bellows) and dimensions. Bellows are protective elements, consisting of a flexible bellows section and two connecting parts for fixing. The contour of the flexible section of the bellows can be cylindrical, conical or barrelled. The connecting parts of the bellows can be designed in the form of annular rings, flat flanges, cylindrical collars etc. Bellows are mostly designed for particular applications, which is why the bellows section and the connecting parts exhibit such a multiplicity of geometric forms. Examples of Use : The bellows protect the ball-joint from dirt - spherical movement. Elastic connection of two tube ends - the bellows takes up longitudinal elongation as well as axial displacement Bellows protects the connecting rod from dirt - axial movement Bellows protects the constant velocity joint from dirt - radial movement – Bellows can follow axial movements within the limits from L min(length when compressed) to L max(length when extended). If these limits are exceeded, the bellows' deformation can be excessive and the function limited. L maxand L mincan be obtained from the Drawings. Where no such details are given, the bellows or the dust cover can accommodate only small movements. Bellows cannot accept any substantial pressure or vacuum because of the high deformation. Increasing the thickness at the transition radii of the convolutions strengthens the bellow but limit the flexibility. The flexible portion of the bellow can be supported by implementing circular shaped metal rings into the fold valley. Be aware, it does not always guarantee the desired results due to the possibility of cracks and cuts caused by the metal ring. To prevent the build-up of pressure inside the bellows due to axial movement, a tongue-shaped venting hole or a small hole can be made at a suitable place in a fold of the bellows. PTFE BELLOWS Highly flexible, highly expandable, can be fitted into confined spaces. Stable sides, good flexibility, adequate length extension reserves. Application Limits for PTFE Bellows : Pressure 0.025 MPa – 0.6 MPa, Temperature: –120 – 200°C. RUBBER & PTFE BELLOWS They are highly flexible components available in wide range of shapes & sizes. They provide a compact protection for shafts, in hydraulic / pneumatic systems, as cover for axle joints, as steering boots, shock absorber protection for the protection of joints.
