Spherical Roller Bearings are designed to work in applications where severe misalignment exists whether from mounting or shaft deflection and with relatively heavy radial loads and some axial loads in either direction. They are also extremely resistant to shock loads and their self-aligning feature allows full capacity loading despite shaft deflection. They are very similar in purpose to Self-Aligning Double Row Ball Bearings, except the Spherical Roller Bearings are designed to be more robust to carry heavier loads but at lower maximum speeds. These bearings have barrel-shaped rollers between the inner ring, which has two raceways, and the outer ring which has one spherical raceway. They are self-aligning because the center of curvature of the outer ring raceway surface coincides with the bearings axis. Standard Spherical Roller Bearings are produced with straight bores; however, tapered bores are available upon request and may be mounted directly on tapered shafts. Pressed steel and machined brass cages are typically used.

Spherical roller thrust bearings are like cylindrical roller thrust bearings but with self-aligning capability. Spherical thrust roller bearings have spherical raceway in the housing washer and asymmetrical rollers obliquely assembled around it. The rings and the housing washer can be separately mounted as well.UBC's spherical roller thrust bearings support very heavy axial loads and are also capable of taking moderate radial loads when an axial load is imposed.

Spherical Roller Bearings are made for heavy-duty applications. They feature two rows of symmetrical barrel rollers. There are two separated raceways within the inner ring. Both roller rows are positioned in a common spherical outer ring raceway and therefore shaft deflection and misalignment at the bearing seating are compensated. They are designed for high radial and relatively high axial loads at medium rotational speed. Spherical Roller Bearings are made either with a cylindrical or with a tapered bore. Therefore, if there is deflection of the shaft or housing or misalignment of their axes, it is automatically corrected so excessive force is not applied to the bearings. Spherical roller bearings can take, not only heavy radial loads, but also some axial loads in either direction. They have excellent radial load-carrying capacity and are suitable for use where there are heavy or impact loads.
