The problem of processing peeled veneer for the Plywood, Joinery and Furniture Industries is made more difficult by the splits in the cross grain due to the shrinkage  and splitting of the log before peeling. The contraction of the veneer during the subsequent drying process increases the splits and causes further deterioration at the edges. Even with the most modern veneer processing equipment this problem still remains. Nearly every log develops dry splits on the edges which are perpendicular to the grain direction. Further splits develop during the peeling process which are propagated due to the tension created while uncoiling the veneer and especially due to the rapid moisture dissipation in the dryer. Subsequently the quality is affected, rejects increase and additional work results. To avoid these losses or at least, keep them within limits, a process was developed to protect the critical veneer edges during the peeling process by adhesive tapes. These adhesive tapes, especially developed for this purpose, retard the moisture dissipation at the veneer edges and thus counteract the development of new splits. Already existing splits are prevented from developing further. Placement of the adhesive tapes occurs continuously and directly behind the peeling devices. Suitable devices provide uninterrupted operation. The above described edge protection does not require any additional personnel. The operator (s) has to only take the start of the adhesive tape and press it's adhesive side on the peeled veneer. After this initial operation the process continues automatically. If tapes are not used, the tape devices can be moved to the sides, and they do not obstruct the further process. The adhesive tape itself is made from a tough special kraft paper and coated with an adhesive which adheres at once to the wet veneer. During the drying process the paper shrinks and therefore offers perfect protection.
