Microcontroller Based 5 Channel Street Light Control Through RTC Schedules the ON/OFF of Street Lights so that it remains ON in the night and switched OFF in day. The timer can be programmed such that the lights will remain on from say 6:00 PM to 12:00 PM and again from 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM (AT89C51). This is a microcontroller based project. As the name suggests, the project is to use to schedule the ON/OFF of Street Lights so that they remain ON in the night and switched OFF in day. The timer can be programmed such that the lights will remain on from say 6:00 PM to 12:00 PM and again from 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM. Thus every channel can be programmed for two times. It has total 5 channels so the circuit can control 5 street lights. The circuit contains a Liquid Crystal Display which shows the Time and Date Calendar. It is also used to view and set the schedule of Street Light ON/OFF times. There are five buttons on the board : Clk to set the clock Hours and Minutes. This key is pressed and held while HH, MM and AM/PM key are pressed to set the clock. Tim This button is used to enter into the Timer Setting Mode and to move in the Timer Setting Menu. HH This key is used to increase the value of Hours in Clock as well as Timer Setting Mode. MM This key is used to increase the value of Minutes in Clock as well as Timer Setting Mode. AM/PM This key is used to toggle between 24hour and 12hour mode and works in only Clock Setting Mode. About the circuit :Figure 1 shows the circuit diagram for the digital clock. 2x16 LCD is connected to the port 2 of AT89C51. P1.0 of uC will provide the SCL (serial clock) and P1.1 SDA (serial data) for I2C communication. When the power supply is switched on it will give you the default date and time, but later you can change it to the desired value. After setting once, the backup battery will keep the clock ticking even after the power is not there. A little about I2C :There are basically four main conditions in I2C protocol. Start Condition Stop Condition Data Validity Acknowledgement Start Condition : When SCL is high and SDA H->L will be taken as start condition for the communication.Stop Condition : When SCL is high and SDA L->H will generate a stop condition.Data Validity : When SCL is high there should be no change in SDA line only then the data is valid, the data change should be made only when SCL is low.Acknowledgement : After sending of one byte of data the receiver has to acknowledge the sender for the successful reception. for this the sender make the SDA line high and receiver pulls down the SDA low, which tells the sender that data has reached safely. Now the source code written in assembly, basically implements the I2C protocol. Pin no. 18 and 19 are connected to the crystal. The function of crystal is to give pulses to the microcontroller which allows the microcontroller to do various calculations. Pin no. 9 of the microcontroller is connected to +5v through a capacitor of 10uF/50v. This causes the microcontroller to reset at Power ON and to begin execution of program from the first line. Pin 3(P1.2), 4(P1.3), 12(P3.2) and 13(P3.3) are connected to switches S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5 while the other end of switches are connected to Ground. So when a button is pressed the port pins P1.2, P1.3, P3.2 and P3.3 get a low depending on which button is pressed and the software inside the microcontroller can take appropriate action. IC 7805 is a voltage regulator IC. It is connected in the input voltage line and limits the voltage to +5v to the circuit. Even if the input voltage goes high up to 14 volts, this IC gives only +5v to the circuit thus preventing any damage.
