Capacitive Proximity Switches are used for the non-contact detection of any objects. In contrast to inductive switches, which only detect metallic objects, capacitive sensors can also detect non-metallic materials. Typical application are in the wood, paper, glass, plastic, food and chemical industries. Capacitive Sensors for example monitor that the contents of a cardboard box are complete or check the presence of the non-metallic caps. Another application is to monitor the conveying of sheets of glass on a roller conveyor. The capacitance between the active electrode of the sensor and the electrical earth potential is measured. An approaching object influences the electrical alternating field between these two " Capacitor Plates". This applies to metallic and non-metallic objects. In principle, capacitive sensors work with an RC oscillator. A very small change in capacitance is enough to influence the oscillation amplitude. The evaluation electronics converts this into switched signal. The user can set the sensitivity with a potentiometer.

A pair of Brass/ Copper disc form the electrodes of a capacitor and the object acts as a dielectric media. The change in capacitance value, due to presence of objects, is sensed by a precision integrated circuit.Connection Diagrams3-Wire & 4Wire DCThese switches operate on 10-30 V Dc and can be used with Logic Circuits, Counters or to drive Relay Coil directly. The output of there switches can be either PNP or NPN or both. The switching is in the sourcing mode and the load must be connected between the Output and the Negative of the supply. Conversely, with NPN output switching is in sinking mode & the load must be connected between the output & the positive of the supply. All 3 wire & 4 wire DC switches are internally Protected against Inductive voltage peaks. Spurious Iine pulses, Reverse polarity short circuit conditions. 2-Wire DCThese switches are designed to operate external Loads connected in series with the switch. During operation, there is a voltage drop of about 6 V across the switch & the load connected in series gets the supply voltage reduced accordingly.2-Wire ACThe AC switches are designed for 2 wire connected and operate on full line voltage. The loads are to be connected in series with the switch in a similar manner to that of a mechanical limit switch. Detection Principle of Capacitive Proximity Sensors Capacitive Proximity Sensors detect changes in the capacitance between the sensing object and the Sensor. The amount of capacitance varies depending on the size and distance of the sensing object. An ordinary Capacitive Proximity Sensor is similar to a capacitor with two parallel plates, where the capacity of the two plates is detected. One of the plates is the object being measured (with an imaginary ground), and the other is the Sensor's sensing surface. The changes in the capacity generated between these two poles are detected.The objects that can be detected depend on their dielectric constant, but they include resin and water in addition to metals.
