The temperature of the arc depends upon the Current per unit cross-sectional area of the arc or the current density of the arc. The temperature of Air Plasma arc goes as high as 30,000 degree C. Hence Plasma is utilised to establish highly constricted arc, which cuts the metal.What is the Priciple of Cutting?After the arc is established cutting takes place by melting the metal under the kerf of the cutting. Energy required for cutting is supplied by the power source. Energy required for cutting (melting) may be expressed mathematically as under:E = M. S. T.whereE = EnergyM = Mass of the metal under the KerfS = Specific heat of the materialT = Temperature difference between ambient and melting.Please Note: This energy is supplied by the power source. Plasma by iitself does not contribute any considerable amount of energy in cutting process. Hence the requirement of energy may be expressed as capacity of D.C. Power Source, KW x Time = E = M.S.T. Please note here that if the capacity of the power source is more it will require less time to meet the energy requirement E.
