OVERVIEW : In simpler terms tear resistance (or tear strength) is a measure of how well a material can withstand the effects of tearing. More specifically it is how well a material (normally rubber) resists the growth of any cuts when subjected to tension, it is usually measured in kN/m. Load is applied to the specimen and a standard test bar in a linear direction through a special Brin ell Ball of 10 mm dia. by a hammer blow. With the impact load being consistent, the extent of indentations obtai ned on the specimen and the test bar depend on their hardness, harder material gives less depth of indentation. The two diameters of indentations are measured by a special “Magnifiscope" measuring magnifier supplied with the tester. The Pendulum is mounted on antifriction bearings. It has two starting positions, the upper one for Charpy & the lower one for izod testing. On release, the pendulum swings down to brake the specimen and the energy absorbed in doing so is measured as the difference between the height of drop before rupture and the height of rise after rupture of the test specimen and is read from the maximum pointer position on the dial scale.
