According to data from Apeda, India exported 13680 tonnes of onion to all African countries in FY21-22, valued at Rs 38.68 crore. This is 0.8 per cent of the total onion exports for that year. In the current financial year, up to December, 9,197 tonnes of onions worth Rs 24.7 crore have been exported. The export market for Indian onions in African countries has the potential to grow many times over. Indian onions are well-liked by African consumers, but Indian traders-exporters do not have direct access to these markets. Onions from India reach some African countries through the Dubai route. Indian onion seeds are currently being exported to African countries, which indicates that there is scope for onion exports of Indian origin. Currently, the Netherlands is the world's leading onion exporter and exports onions to African countries. It has been observed that some non-Indian companies sell onions under the label of "Indian Onion" when marketing onions in African countries. There is a significant potential to increase onion exports to African countries, and it is essential to explore the efforts required to do so through the Ministry of Commerce. The Ministry of Commerce should take steps to increase onion exports by discussing with local traders and exporters. MPs from onion-producing districts of Maharashtra can take the lead in this regard and work towards identifying and addressing the challenges faced by onion exporters. By working collaboratively with all stakeholders, we can tap into the tremendous potential of the African market and increase onion exports from India.
