Packing is done to increase the vapor-liquid interfacial area contact and also preventing excess drop in pressure. A packing column has the material being fed in batch system i.e. one by one.Sieve Tray Columns : These have metal trays with numerous minute holes in a sieve pattern. These are efficient than other types of columns because they prevent backmixing of material to save time and give accurate distillation. Here, the vapor is passed upwards due to a pressure differential via the liquid present on the plate. The working of a Sieve Tray Column is continuous.Bubble Cap Tray Columns : These have chimneys fitted above each hole and covered with a cap. The cap is separated by a gap to allow the vapors to escape easily. The vapor escapes from the chimney and moves downwards by the assistance of the cap, where it is discharged from the cap slots. After discharge, the vapor gets bubbled through the liquid present on the tray.
