Flow quantity of Slurry and pressure required are the basic parameters required for designing the system. However, these two parameters in turn depend on many other conditions like rate of ash to be disposed, pipeline distance, pipeline profile, density of slurry, viscosity of slurry etc. Moreover ash is highly abrasive and pipeline wear also needs to be considered. A critical aspect of system is selection of slurry velocity in the pipeline which should be low to minimize abrasion but high enough to avoid settling of Ash in the pipeline.Slurry with low or medium concentration (usually 45% to 50% by weight) can be pumped using centrifugal slurry pumps. The viscosity of slurry does not have much effect for such conditions while calculating pressure requirement, but as the slurry concentration increases the viscosity effect has a dominant effect for calculating pressure requirement. Generally ash slurry pumping beyond 65% in not feasible, as high concentration slurry requires extremely high pressure which increases exponentially as per the concentration. Such high pressures can be developed using piston diaphragm pumps. These pumps can develop very high pressures but are very costly and have a very high maintenance cost. The high pressures result in higher power consumption though the water requirement is lower in this system.

Scaling:  Scaling occurs when a mineral film coats the entire heat transfer surface of Heat exchanger OR Condenser.   These mineral deposits such as Calcium, lime, Mud and rust rob heat transfer efficiency. This increases energy cost by over 30 %.   Heat Exchangers, Condensers and even Cooling Towers therefore require DESCALING maintenance to improve their efficiency. Evaporative Condenser: When water scale is deposited on the heat transfer surface of an evaporative Condenser, the cooling water from the spray head can not efficiently condense the refrigerant gas in the coils.  As a result inadequate cooling , over worked machinery and expensive operation is incurred.   Shell & Tube Condensers: Water scale deposits in the condenser coils cause the compressor to kick out on high head pressure and lowers the cooling capacity of the unit.   Cooling Towers: Basic principle of Cooling Tower is to cool the water that has picked up heat generated by equipment within facility.  Cooling tower design enhances evaporation & allows further cooling of tower water. This water is then pumped into the facility continuing to cool the equipment Scaling within cooling tower can restrict the water distribution of spray nozzles, reduce the water flow thru the openings of a hot deck and restrict the air flow within the tower. Injection molding machines are typically run at about 65 to 75 percent of their fastest cycle times because of poor heat transfer. It takes just a 1/16-inch-thick build up of scale to cause a 15 percent slowdown in a machine’s cycle because it takes longer to extract the heat. A uniform cooling process is desired to avoid defects in manufactured parts.   How to Get Rid of Scaling : Scale can not be removed by hydro blasting or typical scrubbing. A Descaling agent or chemical descaler is a chemical substance used to remove limescale from metal surfaces in contact with hot water, such as in boilers, water heaters, and kettles.
