Double flap valves are primarily used to discharge chunky or fibrous, bulk materials from hoppers, bins, and cyclones operating under positive or negative pressure. Selection of Cone or Flap depends on the characteristics of material to be handled and system requirement like pressure sealing. Cone valve has a better sealing than the Flap valve. However, in smaller size valves the Cone can act as an obstruction in the flow resulting in clogging of the small opening. The Cone valves usually have round opening whereas the Flap valves can have square.

The Flap Type Gravity Diverter comprises of flap enclosed in body which is key component in supporting diversion of product. This arrangement is used when product coming from top of diverter is to be diverted in vertical direction and angle between diversions of valve is up to 30˚ and 60˚. In above case, only one diversion is in operation and other is closed. In other words, the material can be conveyed from inlet to straight position or inlet to diverted position of diverter at a time. The basic design is for diversion of product coming down due to gravity.

As the material falls on the top plate, during continuous operation the plate opens and discharges the material on the bottom plate. After discharging the material the top plate closes. This ensures that the DFV is sealed to prevent air leakage. The bottom plate then opens after the top plate is closed and allows material to fall onto onward collecting equipment. The cycle time is precisely adjusted such that after the bottom plate closes the top plate opens. Thus ensuring continuous air sealing across the DFV. The time for which both flap are in closed condition, is known as dwell time.
