As shown in adjacent photograph the object to be inspected is a shaft with a line marking on the end face. This presence & orientation of this marking during the assembly process of the shaft, when it is placed into a fixture is very important. The machine vision system checks the presence as well as the orientation of this line marking. By interlocking the Ok / Not Ok signal from the vision system with the fixture locking mechanism the assembled is either allowed or not allowed. Thus machine vision helps in incorrect subassembly of the shaft and prevents problems arising out of at a later stage of manufacturing a complete assembly.

In this case a differential assembly is assembled with planetary gears & brass washers. As one can see in the photograph there are four such gears and a yellowish brass washer behind each gear. The machine vision systems checks the presence of each of these four washers online after the assembly and sounds alarm if any of the washers is found to be missing. The Ok or Not Ok signal is interlocked with a stopper which allows the assembly to move forward on a conveyor only when all the four washers are present.

The Photograph besides show the use of Machine Vision in Industrial application. This is a special purpose machine developed for building an assembly of an hydraulic valve. The valve consists of seven elements stacked one over other. The operator starts the assembly process by placing the bottom most element first. He then assembled o-rings & spring with the element. After completing this the operator presses a button on pendant which initiates a vision test. During this test a camera which is mounted on a vertical side is brought besides each element. The camera captures the image of assembled element and confirms that the o-rings & spring is correctly assembled. After the confirmation the camera moves up again. This process continues till the last element is correctly assembled. Thus machine vision system ensures that all the elements are correctly assembled with o-rings & springs and allows the final torquing operation after the top most element is correctly assembled.

Machine vision is also used widely in industrial applications to measure the dimension and also to check if the part is assembled with correct orientation. As shown in the photograph besides a camera mounted on a horizontal slide is used for inspecting the bearing caps fitted on the cylinder block. The outer two bearings caps out of the four bearing caps fitted on the block are of higher width compared to the inner two bearing caps. Also the operator can fit the bearing caps upside down by mistake. The machine vision systems checks the cylinder block for these mistakes online. An alarm is sounded with fault message if any abnormality is detected.
