Biomass Briquetting is the densification of loose biomass material to produce compact solid composites of different sizes with the application of pressure. Briquetting of residues takes place with the application of pressure, heat and binding agent on the loose materials to produce the Biomass Briquettes. Biomass Briquettes are a bio-fuel alternative to Lignite-coal and Charcoal. Biomass Briquettes are made from agricultural waste and other organic materials, and are used in thermal applications. The bio-fuel is relatively clean burning when compared with the other fossil fuels used today. Biomass Briquettes improve the volumetric calorific value and on average save 30-40% fuel cost. The Biomass Briquettes are also known as White Coal or Bio Coal that is extensively used in various industrial applications for heating boilers. Energy is the significant factor in economic growth of a country. With the conventional sources exhausting rapidly, there has been a surge of the use of Bio energy. Biomass briquettes are a promising bio fuel in the developing world. Due to lack of manufacturing and awareness it is still in the beginning stage in India. With calorific value of more than 3700 Kcal, the Bio Coal is a ready substitute. Biomass Briquetting is a process in which loose biomass material i.e. the agricultural waste undergo densification to produce compact composites with the use of pressure. The process does not include any binders or chemicals thus making it an eco-friendly fuel. It is a high-quality solid fuel suitable for many industrial and commercial applications that is easy to transport and store. It has similar features that of an ordinary coal with the vital improvements that it is clean, non-conventional, and renewable. The specific density of Biomass Briquettes is as high as 1200 kg/m3 when compared to 60- 180 kg/m3 of loose biomass. When compared to wood or coal the Biomass Briquettes have low ash content as well as low moisture level. Two different types of densification technologies are used for making Biomass Briquettes. The first, called pyrolizing technology relies on partial pyrolysis of biomass, which is mixed with binder and then made into briquettes by casting and pressing. The second technology is direct extrusion type, where the biomass is dried and directly compacted with high heat and pressure. Briquettes are cheaper than coal / wood / LDO/ Diesel / Kerosene etc. Oil, coal or lignite once used can�t be replaced. High sulphur content of oil and coal, when burnt, pollutes the environment. There is no sulphur in Biomass Briquettes. Biomass Briquettes have a higher practical thermal value and much lower ash content (2-10% compare to 20-40 % in coal). There is no fly ash in burning briquettes. Briquettes have a consistent quality, have high burning efficiency are ideally sized for complete combustion. Combustion is more uniform compared to coal and boiler response to changes in steam requirements is faster due to higher quantity of volatile matter in briquettes. They are uniform in size and quality. The process helps to solve the residual disposal problem. The process assists the reduction of fuel wood and deforestation. Indoor air pollution is minimized.
