Rod Seals, Piston Seals – Hydraulic cylinders are being used in mechanical applications where reciprocating forces and movements are needed. Sealing element is one of the most important parts of the cylinders. The sealing elements are being installed into the respective groove with a preload. the sealing element in free state, preload after the assembly of the seal and the free space needed in the housing. The sealing element is able to work in low pressures due to this preload. the pressurized media filling into the groove and sealing element is expanded with this pressure. Sealing elements are produced from such materials that can change their form when force is applied and can return to the original form when this force disappears. In this respect sealing elements are produced from elastomers, thermoplastics or thermoplastic elastomers.[

Pneumatic Seals are widely used in the pneumatic cylinders also called air cylinders.

The area between the sealing edge and the shaft is the most important. The sealing effect is achieved by preloading the sealing lip, making its internal diameter slightly smaller than the shaft diameter The garter spring ensures constant pressure and maintains the radial force to the shaft, flattening the sealing edge to a defined width. Underneath this flattened area a thin fluid film is formed. Its thickness must be between 1 and 3 µm to avoid leakage. The meniscus acts as an interface between the outside air and the fluid. Any break in the meniscus will result in leakage. This can occur if the shaft contains scratches along the seal path.

O-Rings are torus-shaped (i.e. doughnut-shaped) objects made from elastomeric compounds such as natural or synthetic rubber, and are used to seal mechanical parts against fluid movement (air or liquid). O-Rings perform their sealing action by deforming to take the shape of their cavity, after being oversized to guarantee a predetermined interference fit.The seal is designed to have a point contact between the o-ring and sealing faces. This allows a high local stress, able to contain high pressure, without exceeding the yield stress of the o-ring body. The flexible nature of o-ring materials accommodates imperfections in the mounting parts.

In rod seals the rod works in the between up and down and the rod seal gives supports to give the proper pressure while in the piston seals piston works up down and the seals works from the outside.

Glyd Ring is a very effective and reliable low frictional seal. It is particularly suitable as a piston seal in both high and low pressure systems. It comprises a PTFE ring, strengthened with additives to resist creep, which is pre-loaded by an O ring to be effective for the operating pressure range recommended. As the pressure rises the O ring deforms and compresses the PTFE ring against the tube wall increasing the sealing force and the effectiveness of the seal. As only the PTFE ring is in contact with the sliding surface, friction is very low and stick-slip movement is eliminated. The geometry of the Glyd Ring ensures a good static sealing and allows the lubricating hydrodynamic oil film to be build under the seal in reciprocating applications.  

Rubber Washers are mainly used in place of O Rings also.
