Automobiles are ubiquitous. They have brought to us a life of utility and luxury. The Automobile sector strives to develop better, faster and efficient machines. As such this industry has seen waves of upheavals. In 1900 the Steam-Powered Carsbecame popular for steam technology promised high speed and power performance. However due to poor fuel economy and cumbersome boiler technology the craze soon subsided. Their place has since been occupied by Gasoline cars. They started from being cantankerous and unreliable to the sleek luxury items of today. In the 21st century the Electrical Vehicle Technology (EVT)is making a comeback. A battery electric vehicle (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are the most popular examples of EVT. The EVT has a minimal reliance on moving parts e.g. starter motors, exhaust systems, radiators, fuel injection systems etc. which are so abundant in conventional cars. Hence the servicing and maintenance is minimized. It doesn’t rely on gas fuels. Both the factors lead to savings. It helps the proliferation of renewable energy being amenable to solar energy technology for electrification. SCOPE AND HIGHLIGHTS Currently the United States is the leading user of EVT. It has more than 4 million hybrid-electric vehicles in use. In the year 2016 there were 13 fully-electric vehicles 30 hybrid electric vehicles and 17 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. A World Bank Study estimates that by 2020, electric value chain on the global level will exceed $250 billion. Environmental factors, Energy costs and technology targets drive the EVT to greater heights. The EVT program prepares the students for work in two domains: product development and service vertical. The program endows the learners with fundamental skills to serve in a mainly research oriented domain. This certificate program is practically intensive with a focus on honing the research ability of the individual.
