Overview The surface of these Rolls have Chill with various alloys and are cast iron based. The matrix structure is pearlitic or bainitic depending on the alloys and its percentage. High alloy content gives uniform carbide distribution and fine deposits of graphite on the microstructure. Desired hardness of these Rolls can be obtained by controlling the chemical composition and using different casting method according to the application. These rolls produce excellent results in plate and section finishing. Application of Indefinite Chilled Cast Iron include: Sheet, plate and strip finishing rolling. It is produced by a small proportion of magnesium added to the melt as nickel-magnesium or alternative alloy, or as pure magnesium. The Working surface of clear chill rolls shows the white graphite free structure consisting of eutectic carbide and transformed austenitne. This gives a hard layer which confers good resistance to wear. Flake graphite is embedded in a matrix of pearlite containing about 0.08% of combined carbon. Compared to grey iron, white chill iron is less soft, strong & incapable of withstanding high dynamic stress, but owing to its greater hardness, has better wear resistance, and has high compressive strength. These make excellent work rolls for two, three and four mills, turning out of high grade ferrous and non-ferrous sheet and strip or section.
