The softest grades have a pearlitic matrix containing ferrite around the graphite nodules, while the higher hardness grades have a complete pearlitic matrix. The carbide content increases proportionately with the hardness.

Some critical grades are heat treated for higher strength. Chemical composition and structure are chosen to suit specific application. In many cases S G Rolls with an accicular matrix is preferred, because of its wear-resisting qualities. S. G. IRON ROLLS has high strength and wear resistance. They are produced by adding a small portion of Megnisium to melt as nickel magnesium or alternate alloys or pure magnesium. The strength of these rolls is almost twice than that of the chill rolls of same hardness, and has very good wear resistance for section rolling. Less tolerance towards adverse thermal conditions, the accurate water cooling is desirable. These rolls are used for roughing, intermediate and furnishing stands of rail and structural mills as well as for wire and narrow strip mills.
