It is called papier mace because it resembles the papier mache design and all surface of fabric is covered by embroidery by continuous overlapping embroidery done by needle giving a painting type effect like papier mache.

Pashmina is fine variant of Cashmere Wool obtained from a special type of goat found in the Himalayas. The name Pashmina is derived from Persian word “Pashm” meaning wool. Pashmina Shawls from Kashmir are world famous as they are hand woven, loomed and hand embroidered. The well known characteristics of the Pashmina Shawl are warmth, soft feel and passing through the ring the reason why it is sometimes called as the ring shawl.

Papier Mache is very old and an intricate Kashmiri Art. This craft involves very skilled craftsmen and is very laborious. Papier Mache items are made by soaking large quantity of paper in a water tank for about two weeks. The purpose of this is to soften the paper. The softened paper is pounded with the help of a hamble till a mud like material is formed. This mud like material is then mixed with glue like substance derived from the pine trees. The mixed material is then put into different shapes and covered with a special paper. The products are then baked in sunlight for 15-20 days to harden the shapes. Dried products are then smoothened with special soil found in very rare mountains of Kashmir Valley. Smoothening is done by sand paper. Finally the products are colored hand painted using natural colors.

Crewel Fabric is made using wool embroidery on cotton, duck, velvet and organza backgrounds. Embroidery is done by hand using Crochet Hook locally called as “Aari”. 1-Ply and 2-Ply wool yarns are used for embroidery. 2-Ply wool Embroidered fabric is costlier than 1-Ply wool. Crewel Fabric can be ordered as per requirement. Normally width of the fabric is between 52” to 60” and length is 20 to 30 yards per bolt. Main use of Crewel Fabric is for Drapery and Upholstery. Crewel Fabric is also used to make curtains, pillow covers, to cover chairs or sofas and as table covers.
