It is extracted from copra (derived from Malayalam word "kopra" which means dried coconut). Coconut oil was developed as a commercial product by merchants in the South Seas and South Asia in the 1860s. While many people live with the misconception that oil in general is not good for health, the fact is that oil used appropriately does promote good health and a beautiful body. Very few oils have multiple human benefits; however, coconut oil is a seed derived oil that can be used from head to toe as well as for cooking. Coconut oil is extremely beneficial for health and Coconut oil in its purest form is good for the hair and skin. In India, almost every household would stock up coconut oil for hair growth and maintenance. Since ages this oil is highly recommended for maintaining good health of the scalp and hair. And nowadays with the pollution and the amount of chemicals one's hair is exposed, the problems seem to be rising. However, the best option is to regularly oil the hair, at last two to three times, prior to a wash. Properties Physical Properties : Coconut oil is a fat consisting of about 90% saturated fat. The oil contains predominantly medium chain triglycerides, with roughly 92% saturated fatty acids, 6% monounsaturated fatty acids, and 2% polyunsaturated fatty acids. Of the saturated fatty acids, coconut oil is primarily 44.6% lauric acid, 16.8% myristic acid and 8.2% palmitic acid, although it contains seven different saturated fatty acids in total. Its only monounsaturated fatty acid is oleic acid while its only polyunsaturated fatty acid is linoleic acid. Unrefined coconut oil melts at 24-25°C (76°F) and smokes at 170°C (350°F), while refined coconut oil has a higher smoke point of 232°C (450°F). Coconut oil has a long shelf life compared to other oils, lasting up to two years due to its high saturated fat content; saturated fats resist rancidity. Coconut oil is best stored in solid form—i.e., at temperatures lower than 24.5°C (76°F) in order to extend shelf life. However, unlike most oils, coconut oil will not be damaged by warmer temperatures. Chemical Properties : Among the most stable of all oils, coconut oil is slow to oxidize and thus resistant to rancidity. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as a hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest due as it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia. Types Unrefined Coconut Oil : This is coconut oil that is derived from copra, and has not undergone the RBD (refined, bleached, deodorized) process that refined coconut oil derived from copra goes through. Almost all of the "unrefined" coconut oils on the market being marketed are produced one of two ways: Quick drying of fresh coconut meat which is then used to press out the oil. Using this method, the coconut meat is quick dried, and the oil is then pressed out via mechanical means. Natural drying of Coconut by storing matured coconut with husk for 10 to 12 months. After the storing period, copra is formed naturally and gets separated from the shell.Coconut is dehusked and shell is broken to obtain Copra. The oil is extracted from Copra by screw pressing. Refined Coconut Oil : Refined coconut oil is referred to in the coconut industry as RBD (refined, bleached, and deodorized) coconut oil. The starting point is "copra", the dried coconut meat. Copra can be made by smoke drying, sun drying, or kiln drying. Refined coconut oil is also manufactured in the country for industrial uses. Refined coconut oil is mainly used in the manufacture of biscuits, chocolates and other confectionery items, ice cream, pharmaceutical products and costly paints. Generally, filtered coconut oil is used for cooking and toiletry purposes.
