Used to determine grade of bitumen. The penetration tests determine consistency of bitumen for the purpose of grading. Depth in units 1/10 of millimeter to which a standard needle having a standard weight will penetrate vertically in a duration of five seconds at a temperature of 25ºC determines penetration for gradation. Salient Features: Specifications: It consists of a vertical pillar mounted on a base provided with leveling screws. The head, together with dial plunger rod and cone (or needle) slides on a pillar and can be clamped at any desired height. A rack & pinion and pointer assemble provides fine adjustment of needle or cone tip to sample. It incorporates a clutch mechanism which makes reading of penetration and subsequent resetting a simple and accurate operation. The dial is graduated in 400 1/10 and the millimeter sub-divisions and the needle pointer against figures makes easy reading. Supplied with bitumen penetration needle, ring weight one each 50 gms, and two sample container. Slump Test Apparatus
The oldest, most widely used test for determining workability. This test is used to determine the workability of fresh concrete, which would normally be undertaken at the point of delivery to ensure the concrete, is of adequate consistency for placement. The test is applicable to concrete of medium workability. The device is a hollow cone-shaped mould. The mold is filled in three layers of each volume. Each layer is rodded with a 16mm steel rod 25 times. The mould is then lifted away and the change in the height of the concrete is measured against the mould. The slump test is a measure of the resistance of concrete to flow under it own weight. The apparatus comprise of a slump cone with handles made of mild steel sheet, a chrome plated steel tamping rod of 16 mm diameter X 600 mm long, rounded off at one end, with a scale marked on it and a steel base plate with a carrying handle. The mould for the test specimen will be in the form of frustum of a cone having the following internal dimensions as follows. The Cone is constructed of metal of at least 1.6 mm thickness and the top and bottom are open and at right angles to the axis of the cone. The mould have a smooth internal surface and provided with suitable foot pieces to a base plate and also handles to facilitate lifting it from the moulded concrete test specimen in a vertical direction as required by the test. The base plate is provided with cleats & swivel handle.

This test is used to determine the particle shape of the aggregate and each particle shape being preferred under specific conditions. The significance of flakiness & elongation index is as follows: The degree of packing of the particles of one size depends upon their shape. Due to high surface area to volume ratio, the flaky and elongated particles lower the workability of concrete mixes. Flaky and elongated particles are considered undesirable for base coarse construction as they may cause weakness with possibilities of braking down under heavy loads. BS-1241 specifies a Flakiness index not exceeding 30% irrespective of the aggregate size. Maximum permitted Elongated index is 35, 40 or 45% for aggregate sizes 2 ½’’ – 2’’, 1 ½’’ – ¾’’ & ½’’ – 3/8’’. The apparatus consist of a small split cylinder of spring brass or other non-corrodible metal of 0.5 mm thickness forming a mould 30 mm internal diameter and 30 mm high. On either side of the split, two indicators are brazed suitably with pointed ends made of 2 mm diameter brass wire in such a way that the distance of these ends to the centre of the cylinder is 165 mm. The split cylinder will be kept between two glass plates.
