A semi-crystalline, white engineering thermoplastic very similar to nylon 6,6 with which it is in many respects interchangeable. Its melt viscosity is not quite as low as 6,6 so it is generally slightly easier to process and often preferred for moulding. Relative to 6, 6 it has somewhat higher impact strength but somewhat lower strength and stiffness and higher water absorption the highest of all nylons. Nylon 66 is synthesised by polycondensation of hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid. Equivalent amounts of hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid are combined with water in a reactor. This is crystallized to make nylon salt, which has precisely stoichiometric equivalents. The nylon salt goes into a reaction vessel where polymerization process takes place either in batches or continuously. It was first introduced by Wallace Carothers on 28th February 1935.Nylon 6,6 is a polyamide made by polycondensation of adipic acid methylenediamine , and contains a total of 12 carbon atoms in each repeating unit .
